The exact way that Duolingo has gone about gamifying their content and progressively making their product worse while monetizing it I think is a slimy business model. Other language resources have also engaged in scummy behaviour, and some have not. Again, this thread is about Duolingo, so I spoke about Duolingo.

I'm guessing because Duolingo is US-based and very US-centric, so they're probably using Mexican Spanish in the course. It definitely doesn't like it when I use English English words/spelling. They teach it in Spanish for Italian speakers, and I think Spanish for German speakers.
