It's not just ynab, this saas model is pretty new in general for anyone over 30. It makes sense for stuff like streaming services where content is constantly changing and being developed, but not for static software. Not enough changes without a "cloud" service to justify a subscription model.

YNAB clicked for me and makes it so I can manage my personal finances and my joint finances with my fiance in one program. I, like someone else mentioned, pretty much rely on import to keep everything in order as we have a LOT of accounts between the two of (retirements, investments, personal and joint accounts, all of our student loans etc)
