The theory behind the lift operation is the same as the later models that I am more familiar with but the actual physical layout is different.

After I reassembled it, with all new gaskets of course, I checked the compression before adjusting the valve clearance just to make sure things were sealing properly. I got 140-150-155 for readings, a lot better than the 60-105-75 ...Sounds like the control valve is out of adjustment and probably sticking. There are two adjustment to make, one with the lever down in draft control position and another with the lever up in position control. While the lift top is off it's best to replace the lift piston o-ring, remove and clean the control valve and check the cam pin for wear.
