Frankly, snow tires make the biggest difference as long as you have any AWD. I strongly recommend Blizzaks. Subaru (Outback), Lexus (Rx), and Tesla (S/X), in my experience, do very well handling 80 and Truckee areas. But when the snow is heavy on the road, better to not drive if possible. Kirkwood is the best skiing in the area IMHO. It is remote though. Flying into Reno is your best bet but Sacramento is not too bad if you're able to get a good flight deal. For advanced skiers squaw, kirkwood or mammoth (not really tahoe) are the way to go. Palisades/Squaw is great, but the parking lot does fill up so you want to make sure you leave with plenty of time. There will be significant traffic between Tahoe City and the mountain pretty much every weekend. But if you don't make it into the Squaw lots, you can always try for Alpine, as its right next door.

It is pretty close to Tahoe, if your goal to be nearby. And its' probably cheaper to live there than Reno/Sparks or Tahoe. The real estate prices on both sides of Tahoe have shot up, especially in 2020 because all the people from the Bay Area are buying up property and inflating the cost of living.
The difference is night and day, the Tahoe much better all around IMO. That being said, I have an employee discount so my Tahoe was only 60K. 75 would make it a harder decision. I was researching 07_14 models, and found the 200-2006 models are bulletproof, much more reliable.
