You don't actually have to put any of that stuff in the farm shed. You can put it all in the resource storage building. The only reason to use the chest in the farm shed is if you're concerned your barn worker will grind up the grain you need for planting, or a market stall will sell your seeds/tools.It unlocks as soon as you have enough tech points, just like any other building. You probably had other edible things in your food storage if you never cooked the meat for them, the ripe berries and most vegetables can be eaten raw by your villagers for example. Workers at the tavern can also cook various foods.

It is ~possible~ to play it as a pure survival game, but the mechanics and gameplay are not designed to accommodate that; they are designed around building a village and staffing it with villagers.
