It is better to take the serial from the bottom of the butt frame since that is the official serial. However, some S&W revolvers have the serial in the yoke cut, like yours. I say early 1982 because later the same year, serial numbers went to a 3 letter prefix on all S&W revolvers. Since your gun has a 2-1/2" barrel it is also a "round butt" frame with a smaller grip to make the gun more concealable.
