Our Assessment: This is a Remington Sportsman 48, an improved version of the Model 11, which was designed by the legendary John Moses Browning. This model was made by Remington from 1949-1960 and retains the long-recoil operating system of the Auto-5 with the now familiar receiver shape of the later models 870 and 1100.Found a Remington Sportsman 48 in 20ga at a local dealer. I have been looking for a "reasonable" soft shooting 20ga for my wife. Want to get her out shooting clays with me, but don't have the money to invest should she not enjoy it. This 48 looks like it will clean up nicely and is fairly light considering the 30" barrel.
It may have been replaced upside down which will cause problems. To further break the gun down, punch out the two pins that hold the trigger group in the gun. Remove the group, then slide the bolt forward out of the gun. Then remove the buttstock and I would remove the spring that returns the bolt. It may be very dirty and gummed up.

Earlier this year I sent my 20ga Remington Sportsman (3 shot Model 11) to Art's Gun Shop in Missouri to have a full strip and clean and one of their rebuild kits installed. The rebuild kit replaces all springs, the brake, friction ring and the buffer in the receiver if needed.

Get a 12-gauge brush and wrap some fine steel wool around it and chuck it in a power drill. Run it in the chamber for a minute.
