PalaBard works because even when the Bard levels don't add much before Bard 5, you're benefitting from the spell slots and can use them to Smite. I wouldn't see much point in multiclassing Ranger beyond 2 levels, after you get to level 6 with a Swords or Valor Bard. Archery fighting style would be valuable, and Hunters Mark.
