The method to open the safe does not affect the loot. I either lock pick or auger, depending on safe difficulty / availability of lock picks. I always Auger the small safes. I usually pick the 7.5k and 10k safes, but often the auger would have been faster. I do absolutely hate the auger sound on safes. 1.

Don’t feel bad, I’ve seen others who have had the same issue. It does make sense that a lockpick could pick a locked door, but the locked doors are there to turn the buildings into dungeons, or if in multiplayer, lock others out (though the land claim usually makes the Door invincible, if you don’t lock the door others can just open it and get into your base.
