What i did was a bit sneaky. You can go to the left of the tower before entering it, jump over the tree roots and then sneak your party up to the rafters above the whole swuad of enemies. You can then surprise them. Jeheira is still hard to keep alive, but a free turn for your party AND the allies does wonders. I think "Long Rests" don't do anything to story, game timeline or anything with only exception you can't go to camp in some locations, but I think (never tried it) you can still take long rests if you have enough food on you in camp-leaving-restricted areas, it just won't be at camp.
