NC. Feb 27, 2012. #1. I never had a D-104. I picked one up along with a bunch of other goodies today, wired it up for my galaxy and it didnt work. I checked and rechecked my wiring, it keys, but just makes bad noises. I think the preamp is bad. Question is, will the D-104 work without the preamp, without the battery.Lets them run power without signal-rectification and 'squeal' problems from the preamp circuit. The D-104 cartridge was the original DX speech processor. The published frequency-response curve shows a peak around 2 kHz, meant to maximize punch for AM operators of the 1930s.

Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. This Astatic is a clear sounding microphone. but lacks bass response. I believe lower bass is about 400Hz. I am using the Astatic into a 600 ohm load. Frankly, I prefer a Power Comm amplified microphone that has about 200Hz to 6000Hz response and costs $16.95 on eBay or about 1/3 the cost of the Astatic D104-M6B. Intended to upgrade old desk mics such as the D-104, 444, and others, even those "made" by radio manufacturers, these kits provide the parts to update almost any desk microphone that has a broken or bad sounding element.
