As a normal empire I tend to grab mastery of nature early as my second ascension perk. But by mid to late game if I'm making heavy use of habitats, I will also grab voidborne. I do not feel they are at all mutually exclusive and both offer great value. I've always found that terraforming in stellaris was limited and that the main mean of "expanding" it (taking the world shaper perk) didn't help much. In particular, I personally think that there should be more terraformable worlds, maybe locked behind an Ascension path including world shaper and mastery of nature.
