You can mitigate recoil by shooting lower velocity and/or smaller payload shells. I like the benelli but its noticeably heavier. It is also finished the best of the other two. Rounded edges, thicker barrel, fit and feel is the best as well. If I could only pick one, id keep the mossberg 835. Mar 4, 2013 · In fairness I've never shot them, this is all based on specs. I've handles a 590A1 and it's heavier than my 870 Wingmaster. Edit: I just checked Mossberg's website and the weight numbers are very close. In fact some 590A1s are lighter than some 590s. Also the 590s only come in 20" but the 590A1s come in 18.5" or 20". It feels thick in your hands. The 870 (or even a 500) felt way more responsive to me. If you just want an entry level beginner pump shotgun - go with the 870. I own it in 12 and 20 and I own a Benelli SBE 2 (which is great) but as a beginner gun, the 870 will last decades, you can beat it up, and it shoots straight.

If I loaded more than three rounds in the mag, two rounds would leave the mag tube when I pumped the gun, jamming it all.
