The thing made it possible was the iron sledge for bats and corner AOE, and getting some early obsidian and frost glands for frost arrows. They’re a bit of a massive pain to find, atleast for me i went through quite a few new mountain biomes before i even saw 1. Probably easiest to start a new world and look up the map seed beforehand. Have a good sense of where the largest mountains are before heading out on a longship. My one piece of advice is to look up. Frost Caves are easiest to see from below. In fact, I have spotted a couple from another biome at the foot of the Mountains. I wasn't sure if they would ever spawn on an old world, so I started a new one after the update, and didn't have any trouble finding the caves.
